Panama, August 2004

Senor Pablo dances
with his broom by the sea

casting off the remnants
    of the weekend guests
        at Sister Moon

    Always new,
occasionally familiar

their stories and laughter
briefly carom off
the wood and stucco,
    fueled by corvina and Atlas

then fading to the silent place
            of memory
back from whence they came

        leaving the innkeeper
and his sweep

He does not see it thus
to him, the movement of the bristles
        in his hands

and the sway to silent music,
        this is the mortar
between the bricks

which are conversations
            anticipated and unexpected
    that build each day

        into his castle
    by the sea
